Vija Vētra

January 1, 1923 - April 12, 2026 (Age 103)

Vija Vētra, our beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2026, just days shy of her 103rd birthday. She left this world as she lived in it - with grace, determination, and an unwavering passion for dance that inspired everyone who knew her. Born in Latvia in 1923, Vija's journey was nothing short of extraordinary. From her early days studying classical ballet in Europe to becoming one of the world's foremost practitioners of classical Indian dance, she never stopped learning, creating, and sharing her art. Those who knew her well remember her infectious laugh, her warm hugs, and the way her eyes would light up when she talked about her latest choreography. Even in her final years, she would still demonstrate dance moves to her great-grandchildren, her spirit undimmed by age. Vija made her home in the United States in 1964, bringing with her a rich cultural heritage that she generously shared with her new community. Her dance studio became a second home to countless students over the decades, many of whom became lifelong friends. She had a remarkable gift for making everyone feel special - whether you were a world-class dancer or someone who could barely keep a beat, Vija would find a way to help you express yourself through movement. Her famous Sunday dinners, where she would cook traditional Latvian dishes while teaching anyone who would listen about the history behind each recipe, will be deeply missed. She is survived by her three children, seven grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren, all of whom were blessed to know her as both a teacher and a loving family matriarch. Vija taught us that life is meant to be lived fully, that age is just a number, and that there's always time for one more dance. As we mourn her passing, we also celebrate a life that touched so many, a life that proved it's never too late to follow your passion or to make a difference in the world. Her legacy lives on in every student she taught, every dance she choreographed, and every person she inspired to find their own rhythm in life.
