William C. Dietz

January 1, 1946 - March 17, 2026 (Age 80)

It’s hard to believe we’re saying goodbye to Will. January 1st, 1946, brought a whole lot of joy into this world, and it continued to radiate outwards for nearly eight decades. I’m going to miss him terribly, but I’m also overflowing with gratitude for every single moment we shared. Will wasn’t a man of grand gestures, you know? He was a quiet force, a steady presence, and the kind of guy who’d always have a perfectly timed, dryly delivered observation ready. I remember once, we were stuck in a ridiculously slow traffic jam, and he just turned to me and said, “Well, this is a fine mess.” It was utterly typical of him – finding the humor in the mundane, and never taking himself too seriously. He had this incredible ability to make you feel instantly comfortable, like you’d known him your whole life. Will’s life was filled with passion, and it’s what he poured his heart and soul into. Of course, everyone knows he was a brilliant science fiction writer, crafting incredible worlds and compelling characters, especially those thrilling Halo novels – I still remember being completely lost in those stories! But beyond the writing, he loved a good puzzle, a perfectly brewed cup of coffee, and spending hours tending to his garden. He took immense pride in his roses, and I swear, he could tell you the Latin name of every single bloom. He was a devoted husband to his beloved Mary, and a truly wonderful father to Sarah and David. Their laughter and love were the center of his world, and he cherished every family gathering, every silly game night, every shared memory. More than anything, Will had a remarkable gift for connecting with people. He listened intently, offered genuine advice, and always made you feel seen and valued. He wasn’t interested in being the center of attention, but he had a way of making everyone around him feel brighter and more hopeful. He encouraged our dreams, celebrated our successes, and offered a comforting shoulder during difficult times. His impact on our lives is immeasurable – he taught us the importance of kindness, the value of quiet strength, and the beauty of a well-placed pun. Will, you were a truly special man, a brilliant storyteller, and a beloved friend and family member. You’ll be deeply missed, but your stories, your laughter, and your spirit will live on in all of us. Rest in peace, my dear friend.
