William Lukuvi
January 1, 1956 - March 25, 2026 (Age 70)
William Lukuvi, beloved husband, father, friend, and tireless servant of his country, left this world on March 25, 2026, after a brief but fierce battle with a heart attack. He was 70 years old, and though his time with us was cut short, the imprint he left on every corner of his life is unmistakable. I still remember the way he’d lean back in his favorite chair, a steaming mug of chai in hand, and spin a story about the early days of his political journey—how he’d sneak into council meetings as a young student, eyes wide with wonder, dreaming of a Tanzania where every village had a voice. Those stories never grew old; they grew richer, just like his laughter, which could fill a room and chase away any lingering gloom.
Family was the heart of William’s world. He married his high school sweetheart, Aisha, in 1980, and together they built a home that felt like a sanctuary for their three children—Mariam, Jamal, and little Amina, who still insists on calling him “Grandpa Bill” even when she’s not around. He never missed a school play, a birthday cake, or a Sunday dinner, and his kitchen was always stocked with the aroma of his famous spiced rice, a recipe he swore was “the secret to keeping the family together.” He loved to tease his grandchildren with riddles, and his eyes would light up whenever they managed to solve one, even if it took them a whole afternoon. Those moments, simple and sweet, are the ones we will forever hold dear.
Beyond politics and family, William was a man of many passions. He was an avid gardener, spending Sundays tending to his modest plot of land where tomatoes, chilies, and mangoes grew side by side—a metaphor, he’d say, for the harmony he sought in governance. He never missed a Tanzania Premier League match, cheering louder than anyone else, and he could recite the names of every player from the 1998 squad as easily as he could name his own children. He also loved to travel, especially to the coastal towns where he’d sit on the beach, listening to the waves and dreaming of a future where every Tanzanian could enjoy the same simple joys he found there.
William’s impact reached far beyond his constituency of Ismani. As Minister of Lands, Housing and Human Settlement Development from 2015 to 2022, he championed projects that gave families safe roofs over their heads and turned barren plots into thriving communities. Even after stepping down, he remained a trusted advisor to President Samia Suluhu Hassan, guiding political and social relations with the same humility and wisdom that defined his entire career.
