William Thoresson
January 1, 1933 - March 6, 2026 (Age 93)
It’s hard to believe we’re saying goodbye to William. Papa, as we all knew him, passed away peacefully on March 6th, at the incredible age of 93. He was a force of nature, a whirlwind of energy and a genuinely kind soul – a man who lived a life brimming with passion and, frankly, a little bit of glorious chaos. I still remember when I was about eight and he tried to teach me to do a cartwheel in the garden. Let’s just say it involved a lot of giggling, a scraped knee, and a very patient Papa who never lost his enthusiasm. That was just William – always encouraging, always laughing, and always ready to try something new, even if it meant a bit of a mess.
Of course, we all knew about his incredible career as a gymnast. Winning gold at the 1952 Olympics was an unbelievable achievement, and the silver in 1956, and that bronze at the World Championships in ‘54, were testaments to his dedication and talent. But for William, it wasn’t just about the medals. It was about the discipline, the challenge, and the sheer joy of movement. He’d spend hours practicing, not for glory, but because he *loved* it. He’d tell us stories about the Olympics, not with boastfulness, but with a quiet pride and a twinkle in his eye, always emphasizing the camaraderie and the spirit of competition. He was so proud of his heritage and his country, and he instilled that same sense of pride in all of us.
Beyond the Olympics, William was a devoted husband to my mother, Ingrid, and a wonderful father and grandfather. He loved nothing more than spending time with his family, whether it was building model airplanes, tending to his roses, or simply sitting on the porch, watching the world go by. He had this incredible ability to make everyone feel seen and valued, and he always had a story to tell, a joke to share, or a piece of advice that was both practical and profoundly wise. He truly touched so many lives with his warmth and generosity.
William’s legacy isn’t just in the history books; it’s in the countless memories he created and the love he shared. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit – his joy, his determination, and his unwavering kindness – will live on in all of us. Rest in peace, Papa.
