Yaakov Edri
January 1, 1951 - March 19, 2026 (Age 75)
It’s hard to believe Yaakov is really gone. It feels like just yesterday he was regaling us with some ridiculous story from his time as mayor of Or Akiva – usually involving a stubborn goat or a particularly enthusiastic group of tourists. He had this incredible way of making everything sound like an adventure, even the most mundane things. I remember one time, we were driving through the desert and he insisted on stopping to examine a particularly interesting rock formation, completely ignoring the highway. He’d say, “You never know what you’ll find if you just take a moment to look!” That was Yaakov in a nutshell – always curious, always seeking, and always ready to pull over for a good, unexpected discovery. He wasn’t a man of grand pronouncements, but of quiet observations and genuine connection.
Yaakov’s life was one of service, a deep and abiding commitment to his country and the people he loved. He dedicated himself to improving the lives of so many, first as mayor, then as an MK, and later as a minister – always with that same earnestness and determination. He poured his heart into the Negev and Galilee, wanting to bring opportunity and prosperity to those communities, and he was fiercely proud of the work he did to support new immigrants. But beyond the politics and the official titles, he was a devoted husband to Sarah and a wonderful father to David and Rachel. He loved them fiercely, and they, in turn, adored him. The sound of his laughter, his booming voice, and his terrible singing – bless his heart – will be deeply missed.
He found joy in the simple things: a good cup of coffee, a beautiful sunset, a lively debate about politics (usually ending with him stubbornly holding his ground!). He was a passionate reader, a surprisingly skilled gardener, and he could always be counted on to offer a helping hand or a word of encouragement. More than anything, he valued relationships – building bridges and fostering connections with everyone he met. He had this remarkable ability to make you feel seen, heard, and valued, and he left an indelible mark on all of us who were lucky enough to know him.
Yaakov’s legacy isn’t just in the policies he championed or the positions he held, but in the countless lives he touched with his kindness, his humor, and his unwavering belief in the good of people. He will be profoundly missed, but his spirit – that adventurous, optimistic spirit – will live on in all of us who loved him.
