Zofia Zdybicka
January 1, 1929 - April 25, 2026 (Age 97)
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Zofia Zdybicka, on April 25, 2026, at the age of 97. Born on January 1, 1929, Zofia lived a life of profound purpose and unwavering faith, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew her. For those of us fortunate enough to have loved her, she was more than just a nun; she was a beacon of wisdom, a source of gentle strength, and a truly remarkable woman. I’ll never forget the way she’d light up when discussing philosophy, her eyes sparkling with an almost childlike curiosity. She had a gift for making complex ideas accessible and, more importantly, for sparking thoughtful conversations.
Zofia’s dedication to her vocation as a member of the Congregation of the Ursulines was evident in everything she did. She spent decades as a professor at the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin, shaping the minds of generations of students with her insightful teachings on ontology and the philosophy of religion. I remember countless hours spent in her office, not just discussing academic topics, but sharing stories, offering advice, and simply being a comforting presence. She had a remarkable ability to see the best in people and to encourage them to reach their full potential. Beyond her academic achievements, Zofia possessed a warmth and generosity that touched countless lives. She always had time for a kind word, a listening ear, or a warm cup of tea.
Her love extended deeply to her family – though she often spoke of her life in service to God as her primary calling, her devotion to her siblings and cousins was unwavering. She was a constant source of support and encouragement, always celebrating their successes and offering comfort during difficult times. She instilled in us the importance of faith, compassion, and intellectual curiosity – values that have guided our lives ever since. She taught us that even in the face of uncertainty, there is always hope and beauty to be found.
Zofia’s legacy extends far beyond the classroom and the convent walls. She embodied the spirit of service and intellectual pursuit, inspiring countless others to live lives of meaning and purpose. She will be deeply missed by her sisters, nieces, nephews, and all those whose lives she touched. Though she is no longer physically with us, her wisdom, her kindness, and her unwavering faith will continue to inspire us for generations to come. May she rest in peace.
