Zofia Zdybicka
January 1, 1929 - April 25, 2026 (Age 97)
Zofia, my dear friend and teacher, is gone, but the world feels emptier without her gentle presence. I remember her walking into a room not with a fanfare, but with a quiet, steady warmth that immediately made everyone feel seen. She had this incredible way of listening, truly listening, as if every word you spoke was the most important thing in the world. Her laugh was a deep, hearty sound that seemed to shake her whole being, and it was infectious.
Born at the very beginning of 1929, her life was a long and beautiful journey of faith and thought. As a Polish Roman Catholic nun, known as Maria Józefa, her mind was a relentless engine for philosophy, diving deep into ontology and the mysteries of religion. She spent her days at the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin, not just as a professor, but as a guide, lighting a fire in her students to ask the big questions. For her, philosophy wasn't an abstract game; it was a way to understand the heart of existence and our connection to the divine.
Her joy came from the simplest things: a perfectly brewed cup of tea, a walk in the garden, the steadfast love of her family. She poured her heart into her nieces and nephews, always ready with a word of wisdom or a plate of her famous pierogi. She taught us that kindness is the highest form of wisdom and that faith is lived in the small, daily acts of love.
Zofia touched so many lives, offering counsel and comfort with a humility that was her hallmark. She showed us how to think with depth and to love with an open heart. We will miss her voice, her wisdom, and her unwavering spirit, but her legacy lives on in every person she inspired to look a little deeper and to love a little more. We are all better for having known her.
