Captain James Michael Rodriguez, USN (Ret.), 73, passed away unexpectedly on February 1, 2026, in San Diego, California. A decorated naval officer and devoted father, James lived a life of service, honor, and adventure.
Born in San Antonio, Texas, James graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1974. He served 30 years in the Navy, commanding ships across the Pacific and earning the Defense Superior Service Medal. After retirement, he became a mentor to young veterans and volunteered with Wounded Warrior Project.
James was an avid sailor, fisherman, and storyteller. His tales of life at sea captivated everyone who heard them. He never met a stranger and had a gift for making people feel important.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Maria Rodriguez; children Sarah Rodriguez-Chen and James Rodriguez Jr.; and five grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society.
