Chief William "Bill" Running Bear

January 10, 1938 - January 26, 2026 (Age 88)

Flagstaff, Arizona

Chief William "Bill" Running Bear, 88, of Flagstaff, Arizona, walked on to join his ancestors on January 26, 2026. A leader of the Navajo Nation, Bill dedicated his life to preserving his people's language, culture, and sacred lands. He was a code talker in the Korean War, though he rarely spoke of it, saying his real work was building the future for Navajo children. Bill was a master silversmith, storyteller, and keeper of traditional songs. He established the Running Bear Cultural Center and taught hundreds of young people the old ways. He fought tirelessly for water rights, education, and recognition of Native sovereignty. His wisdom and quiet strength touched people across the nation. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary; six children; 18 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and the Navajo Nation he served with honor. Traditional services will be held on January 30th. The family welcomes all who wish to honor Bill's memory. Memorial gifts may be made to the Running Bear Cultural Center.
