Margaret Ann Johnson
March 8, 1940 - March 8, 2026 (Age 85)
Portland, OR
It feels utterly surreal to be writing this, to say goodbye to Margaret Ann Johnson. March 8th, 2026, marked the end of a truly remarkable life, a life that felt, quite simply, overflowing with joy and kindness. Born in Boston in 1940, Maggie – as everyone called her – carried that Boston spirit with her always: a little bit stubborn, a whole lot warm, and fiercely loyal. I remember when I was a kid, she’d drag me to every antique shop in the city, convinced we’d find a hidden treasure, and we always did, usually something ridiculously impractical but utterly delightful. She had this incredible ability to find beauty in the everyday, and to share that beauty with everyone she met.
Maggie’s life was a beautiful tapestry woven with love and laughter. She and Dan – my Uncle Dan, to me – were the very definition of a partnership, a quiet, steady love that spanned over fifty years. They built a wonderful home filled with books, the scent of roses from her beloved garden, and the soulful sounds of jazz – Maggie could really *feel* a good saxophone solo. She was the most devoted mother to Sheila, always encouraging her dreams and celebrating her successes, and she adored her parents, Elenor and Brad, and her brother, Joe. She always said family was everything, and she lived that belief every single day.
Beyond family, Maggie was a force of nature. After a career as a beloved elementary school teacher, she finally got to pursue her own passion – writing. And let me tell you, she was brilliant! Her mystery novels were captivating, full of clever twists and wonderfully quirky characters. But more than her published works, it was her spirit that captivated everyone. She was adventurous, always up for a road trip or a spontaneous visit, and she had this infectious smile that could light up a room. She had a knack for making you feel seen, heard, and valued, and she genuinely cared about the people in her life.
Margaret leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and a whole lot of beautifully written stories. She touched so many lives with her generosity and her unwavering optimism. We will miss her terribly, but we’ll carry her spirit with us, always remembering her warmth, her wisdom, and that unforgettable smile.
