William "Bill" O'Brien

September 17, 1941 - January 25, 2026 (Age 84)

Portland, OR

William "Bill" O'Brien, 84, a beloved carpenter, environmentalist, and storyteller, passed away peacefully on January 25, 2026, in Portland, Oregon. Bill lived a life true to his values: craftsmanship, conservation, and community. For over 60 years, Bill built beautiful custom furniture from reclaimed wood, creating heirlooms that will outlive us all. His workshop was a gathering place where neighbors came for advice, coffee, and his famous tall tales. An early advocate for old-growth forest protection, Bill helped establish three state parks in Oregon. He believed in leaving the world better than he found itโ€”and he did. Bill is survived by his partner of 40 years, Linda Chen; children Sean O'Brien and Kathleen Murphy; five grandchildren; and his faithful dog, Timber. A celebration of life will be held at his favorite hiking spot on Mount Hood.
